I still wonder about how they did the bathroom stuff on the longer Gemini flights. Like, obviously the stuff gets jettisoned, but I wonder about the collection procedure and stuff.
I mean, it’d be easy enough to pee in a bag or something, but how do you poop in space?
oh oh ignore the thing i replied, i remember basically they had to…glue a bag to their butt and poop in it and take it off and stick a germicide pill in there and then store it somewhere. some of the tumblr nasa fandomy people were discussing it once i think but i can’t find much information bc i can’t remember what they were called
but obvs the astronauts hated them and kind of refused to use them or some such
edit - here is some info but it’s still apollo which spacecraft were somewhat more roomy than gemini
edit edit - mary roach wrote a book called packing for mars and there is a section dedicated to poop and it’s really good and she’s funny and all her books are rad and sciency and everyone should read em
